Early Life
Jewish parents gave birth to Gordon in Los Angeles, where he was reared. She is the daughter of writer-director Jessie Nelson and filmmaker Bryan Gordon. Molly began acting on LA stages at an early age and spent her formative years with actor Ben Platt, with whom she co-starred in performances of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at age five and Fiddler on the Roof at age four.
She developed an interest in comic acting as a result of her frequent viewings of the sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live and attendance at performances of the comedy group The Groundlings. When she was 17 years old, she played Dot in the Sunday in the Park with George production at her high school. Despite her subpar SAT results, she temporarily attended New York University before quitting after two weeks because she wasn’t happy with the course she was taking. One of the radio producers known as The Kitchen Sisters is her aunt, Davia Nelson.
