Odeya Rush Early Life, Family

Odeya Rushinek was born to an Ashkenazi Jewish (Polish- and Russian-Jewish) family in Haifa, Israel. Her mother Maya Greenfeld was born in Soviet Russia and immigrated to Israel, whereas her father Shlomo Rushinek is a Sabra (Jew born in Israel). Her first name means “I will thank God” in Hebrew. She started writing and performing plays when she was eight years old in her hometown of Haifa, Israel.

When she was nine years old, her family emigrated to the US so that her father could accept a position as a security consultant in Alabama. Rush could only speak Hebrew and had no knowledge of English when she arrived. She lived in Birmingham, Alabama, where she attended the N. E. Miles Jewish Day School; later, she moved to Midland Park, New Jersey, where she attended the local public school.

Rush’s family relocated to Los Angeles at the start of 2013. She has six brothers, two sets of twins who live with their parents in Los Angeles, two older paternal half-brothers who live in Israel, and four who are younger than she is.

Odeya Rush Career

Before she became an actress, Rush started her career as a model in the United States during her childhood and adolescence, appearing in significant campaigns and commercials for clothing companies like Polo Ralph Lauren, Gap, Tommy Hilfiger, and H&M.

In 2018, she also served as the face of a summer campaign for a partnership between FILA and Urban Outfitters. Her first acting roles were in the 2010 episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm’s “Mister Softee” and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s “Branded,” where she played Emily and Hannah Milner, respectively.

In the Disney film The Odd Life of Timothy Green, directed by Peter Hedges, she played Joni Jerome, Timothy’s best friend, in 2012. Rush co-starred as Fiona in Phillip Noyce’s 2014 science fiction picture The Giver, which was adapted from Lois Lowry’s 1993 book of the same name. Alongside Taylor Swift and Katie Holmes, the movie also stars Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard, Brenton Thwaites, and Meryl Streep.

In the comedic movie See You in Valhalla from 2015, Rush portrayed Ashley Burwood, the niece of Johana Burwood (played by Sarah Hyland). The female lead in the movie Goosebumps, which was adapted from the well-known book series by R. L. Stine was Rush’s next part. Jack Black’s character R. L. Stine’s “daughter,” played by Rush, teamed up with her neighbour to battle the Goosebumps monsters.

Rush finished shooting the mockumentary comedy Dear Dictator in 2016, in which she co-starred with Michael Caine and Katie Holmes. She was also chosen to play Ella Hatto alongside Sam Worthington in Jonathan Mostow’s action-thriller The Hunter’s Prayer.

Rush appeared as a supporting character in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird in 2017, for which she and the rest of the ensemble received multiple nominations. The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and J. K. Simmons co-starred in The Bachelors in 2017. Rush debuted in 2021’s Hebrew-language Israeli drama series Baalat HaChalomot as the show’s title character. The following year, she appeared as Macy in the comedy-drama Cha Cha Real Smooth and as River in the supernatural horror film Umma.
