She received much praise in 2020 for her performance in the Netflix drama Unorthodox. She received nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance. Early Life

Haas was born into a secular Jewish household in Tel Aviv, Israel. Her parents are of Ashkenazi Jewish (Polish, Hungarian, and Czech) ancestry and were both born Jews in Israel (also known as “Sabra”). Haas grandfather had been detained in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Her grandparents both survived the Holocaust. Her first name literally translates to “singing” or “her song” in Hebrew.

She lived with her older sister and brother in the Israeli city of Hod HaSharon after her family relocated there when she was a year old. Haas was diagnosed with kidney cancer at age two and underwent a series of difficult treatments before making a full recovery two years later. Her mother Ariela “Leah” Haas, age 61, passed away from cancer on August 3, 2022, after many weeks in hospice care.

She majored in theatre while attending the Thelma Yellin High School of Arts in Givatayim, Israel, before completing a brief stint of voluntary duty in the military theatre of the Israel Defense Forces. Together with other Jewish actors Ben Platt and Josh Malina, she participated in a virtual event honouring Israel’s 72nd Independence Day and sent birthday greetings to Israel.

At the age of 14, Shira Haas began performing in plays at the Cameri Theatre. Richard III and the Ghetto are two of the theatres. Additionally, she made her television debut as Ruchami Weiss in the drama series “Shtisel.”

She began her professional career after completing her studies, and the director Esther King contacted her via Facebook Messenger to encourage her to audition for the lead role in the 2014 film “Princess.” Haas made her acting debut in the film “Princess,” and the New York Times praised her for a brilliant, outstanding performance. She also won Best Actress prizes at the Peace & Love Festival and the Jerusalem Film Festival. She was also nominated for the Israeli Academy Awards for Best Leading Actress.
