Haas was born into a secular Jewish household in Tel Aviv, Israel. Her parents are of Ashkenazi Jewish (Polish, Hungarian, and Czech) ancestry and were both born Jews in Israel (also known as “Sabra”). Haas’s grandfather had been detained in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Her grandparents both survived the Holocaust. Her first name literally translates to “singing” or “her song” in Hebrew.
She lived with her older sister and brother in the Israeli city of Hod HaSharon after her family relocated there when she was a year old.

She majored in theatre while attending the Thelma Yellin High School of Arts in Givatayim, Israel, before completing a brief stint of voluntary duty in the military theatre of the Israel Defense Forces. Together with other Jewish actors Ben Platt and Josh Malina, she participated in a virtual event honoring Israel’s 72nd Independence Day and sent birthday greetings to Israel.
At the age of 14, Shira Haas began performing in plays at the Cameri Theatre. Richard III and the Ghetto are two of the theatres. Additionally, she made her television debut as Ruchami Weiss in the drama series “Shtisel.”
